Children's Summer Discovery Workshops

Compass Rose

In the summer, at Washington's Ferry Farm and Historic Kenmore, children, ages 4-10, can connect with history through hands-on participation in fun and engaging activities that will help them better understand colonial lifestyles, American Indian culture, and today’s natural world.

Workshops for children ages 6-10 last 1-1/2 hours and cost $8 per child. Workshops for pre-schoolers, ages 4-5, last 1 hour and cost $5 per child.

Registration is now open!
Space is limited, so be sure to register early.

Ferry Farm Workshops

Civil War at Ferry Farm ~ Discover through hands-on activities what was going on in the lives of soldiers and civilians during the Civil War and how war changed the land and river around Ferry Farm. Ages 6-10 - July 22 & August 5

Corn, Canoes, and Buffalo Fur ~ A preschool program where children play games, make music and crafts, and learn about the life of the Powhatan Indians in Virginia in the 1600s.
Ages 4-5 - July 21 Children diggin in arcaheology workshop

I Dig George ~ An archaeological experience geared to children. Participants get a chance to dig, wash, and mend what they find in our educational digs on the property.

Games Through Time ~ Play 18th-century games as George Washington would have! Play 17th-century American Indian games as the Powhatan did! Children learn games played in Virginia over the last 400 years. Ages 6-10 - July 11

How Does Your Garden Grow? ~ Participants will take a fun, five senses beetle tour of Ferry Farm's 18th-century-style garden and discover the wonders of both colonial and modern gardening. Ages 6-10 - July 9 & Aug. 6

Nature Exploration ~ Explore the forest, gardens, and meadows where George Washington played as a boy and learn about all the creatures that still live here today. Ages 6-10 - July 24 & Aug. 8arrowhead

Powhatan Indians: First Virginians ~ Explore the culture of the Powhatan Indians and their relationships with nature through crafts, hands-on activities, and games. Ages 6-10 - July 15 & Aug. 4

 

 

Historic Kenmore Workshops

History Through the Arts ~ This is a sensory preschool tour of the 18th century through art, music, dance and theater. Participants will enjoy activities as they use their five senses to learn about life in the 1700s. Ages 4-5 - July 17 & Aug. 7.

Play and Work in the 18th Century ~ Through games and activities, participants will have a chance to learn about everyday, 18th-century life through a child’s eyes. Ages 6-10 - July 8 & 22.
