Archaeology Dig Diary - 2006

In 1748, when George Washington was only 16 years old, he embarked on his first excursion into the wilderness as part of a surveying party. During that trip he began keeping a diary, a habit he would continue for the rest of his life. His diaries were mostly contained entries that describe where and how he spent his time.

George Washington Diary Entry

In 2005, I began a diary of our dig at Ferry Farm. Year Two of this archaeology diary will again attempt to follow the spirit of George Washington's diaries in that it documents the day-to-day progress of the excavation of the Washington farm archaeology site. I pledge that this year’s entries will be made in a more timely fashion. As always in archaeology, the interpretations are preliminary in nature and subject to change as new evidence is unearthed.
