George Washington's Fredericksburg Foundation

Clothes Press With the creation of the Kenmore Association in the early 1920s, collecting immediately became a vital function of the organization dedicated to preserving Kenmore and interpreting the lives of Fielding and Betty Lewis. In the following decades, generous contributors offered both objects and funds to help support the collecting efforts of the Association. These important objects were used to furnish Kenmore and help enhance the public's understanding of the lives of the Lewises and their role in the culture of colonial-era Fredericksburg, Virginia.

In 1996, with the acquisition of Ferry Farm and the subsequent name change to George Washington's Fredericksburg Foundation, the collecting scope expanded to allow for the assembling of items that would assist in interpreting the lives of members of the Washington family.

Items that are actively collected by the Foundation include examples of fine decorative arts made before 1800, particularly in Virginia, objects and manuscripts related to the descendants of George Washington and Fielding and Betty Washington Lewis, and items concerning other occupants of Kenmore and Ferry Farm. Today, hundreds of objects, archaeological artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, books, and printed materials make up our extensive collections.
