Back of postcard reads: The Washington Farm. It was here that Augustine Washington, the father of George Washington, died on April 12th, 1743, aged 49 years. It is situated opposite Fredericksburg and was known then as the "Ferry Farm." The illustration shows the only building remaining, which is said to have been used by Washington, who was then 11 years old, as a workshop while acquiring practice surveying.
Note: The building pictured in this postcard has been studied by archaeologists in recent years and it has been determined that the structure dates to the late 1800s (post Civil War) rather than to the Washington's time, so it could not have been used by young George as a workshop. Despite this, the structure is still popularly called the surveyor's shed.
The Washingtons did not call their property "Ferry Farm," but referred to it as the "Home Farm." Only in later years, long after George Washington sold the property, did the Ferry Farm name come into popular use.
