West Entrance to Kenmore

The West Entrance to Kenmore

Back of postcard reads: "Kenmore, built 1746 by Fielding Lewis for his wife Betty, George Washington's only sister. The interior decorations were done by Hessian prisoners during the revolution. Corner Lewis Street and Washington Avenue."

Note: There are several factual errors on this card. Construction of Kenmore was started around 1769 and completed in 1775. Betty was not George Washington's only sister. He had one half-sister, Jane, who died as a young girl and one other sister, Mildred, who died in infancy. Hessian prisoners did not decorate the ceilings of Kenmore. They were done by a craftsman known only as the "Stucco Man."
