
Shown in the diagram below is a partial family tree for William Key Howard, who purchased Kenmore in 1881. His son, William Key Howard, Jr., restored the badly damaged, decorative plaster ceilings after the Civil War.
As can be seen, William Key Howard was related to Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star Spangled Banner.

Clara Haxall Randolph was an interesting character in her own right. Descended from a famous Virginia patriot, Thomas Mann Randolph, she was arrested in Baltimore, MD in 1864, accused as a Confederate spy and smuggler, for which she served time in prison.
